What are the applications of calcium bromide in the metallurgical industry

Sources:www.worldbrom.com | PublishDate:2026.06.10

1、 Magnesium/rare earth magnesium alloy refining flux (the most mainstream use in metallurgy)
Calcium bromide is one of the core components of rare earth magnesium alloys and die-casting magnesium alloys composite refining agents, often used in combination with calcium chloride, barium chloride, calcium fluoride, and potassium chloride.
Remove gas and inclusions
At high temperatures, bromide ions are released and react with MgO and Al ₂ O3 oxide inclusions inside the melt, generating low-density and easily floating slag; Simultaneously adsorb and dissolve hydrogen, rapidly dehydrogenate, and reduce casting porosity and porosity defects.
Improve flux density and spreadability
Calcium bromide has a higher melting density than ordinary chloride flux, and the settling speed of the slag layer is faster. It can be separated after a short period of standing, and there will be no flux inclusions; The surface of the melt is evenly spread, isolated from air to prevent secondary oxidation and combustion.
Suitable for high rare earth magnesium alloys
For magnesium rare earth alloys with high rare earth content and high melt viscosity, compared to simple sodium and potassium salt fluxes, the CaBr ₂ system has stronger refining stability and does not damage the grain refinement effect.
2、 Wet extraction of rare metals (bromine complexation leaching)
1. Bromination leaching of precious metals and rare metals
Bromine ions can form stable soluble metal bromide complexes with gold, silver, platinum, indium, thallium, and other metals; Calcium bromide provides high concentrations of Br ⁻ and Ca ² ⁺, regulates the ionic strength of the system, stabilizes pH, replaces some hydrobromic acid, and reduces equipment corrosion pressure.
2. Brominated roasting aids for ores
When dealing with difficult to decompose rare metal ores, a little amount of CaBr ₂ is used as a brominating agent. High temperature decomposition releases Br ₂, converting metal sulfides/oxides into water-soluble bromides, which are then separated and purified by water leaching.
3、 Protection and melting aid for non-ferrous metal refining
1. Low temperature melting aid for aluminum, zinc, and lead alloys
Add a littlel amount to the chloride salt covering agent to lower the melting point of the flux and improve fluidity; Bromine ions inhibit the thickening of the oxide film on the metal surface, improve the fluidity of the metal liquid, and facilitate the casting of thin-walled castings.
2. Recycling and impurity removal of waste metals
When recycling magnesium and aluminum waste materials for remelting, CaBr ₂ flux strips off the surface oil stains, rust and oxide layers of the waste materials, separates impurities and floating slag, and improves the purity of recycled metals.
4、 Laboratory Special Metallurgy and Electroplating Substrate
1. Vacuum melting atmosphere regulator
Anhydrous calcium bromide has strong hygroscopicity and is used as a drying agent in furnaces to absorb furnace water vapor and prevent high-temperature water vapor oxidation of active metals (lithium, beryllium, rare earths); Micro bromination atmosphere can also be fine tuned.
2. Preparation of metal bromide precursor
As raw materials for synthesizing metal bromides such as zinc bromide and aluminum bromide for electroplating and hot plating, indirectly serving the metal surface anti-corrosion coating industry.
