In the pharmaceutical industry, ammonium bromide has the following applications:
1. Central inhibitory effect:
Sedation and Hypnosis: Bromine ions can enhance the inhibitory effect of central gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA), reduce neuronal excitability, and can be used as an adjuvant therapy for neurasthenia, insomnia, and epileptic seizures. Clinically, it is often combined with sodium chloride, such as "sodium bromide ammonium bromide mixture", which works by regulating the concentration of bromide ions in body fluids.
Anticonvulsant: In status epilepticus, intravenous injection of 5% -10% ammonium bromide injection can be used to quickly control seizures, especially for patients allergic to phenytoin sodium.
2. expectorant effect: Bromine ions can stimulate the respiratory mucosa, promote glandular secretion, dilute sputum, improve mucus flow, and are used for patients with chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and other conditions where thick phlegm is difficult to cough up. It is often combined with ammonium chloride to form compound oral solutions, such as "Compound Ammonium Bromide Oral Solution", which synergistically enhances the expectorant effect.
3. Local disinfection and imaging assistance: When applied topically, 10% ammonium bromide solution can be used for disinfection of the skin or mucosa, such as mouthwash for oral inflammation, to kill bacteria through the oxidative properties of bromine. In radiographic imaging, it can serve as an diffusive pressure regulator for bronchial contrast agents, maintaining isotonic balance between the contrast agent and body fluids and reducing stimulation.
4. Pharmaceutical excipients: In some oral liquid formulations, ammonium bromide can be used as an diffusive pressure regulator and co solvent to increase the solubility of insoluble drugs, such as certain alkaloids, while maintaining the physiological compatibility of the formulation.
